What’s going on here?

The project: A new self-storage facility will open this summer near Center Avenue and the Highway 11 bypass in Janesville. The facility is owned by Fox Den Store-It, which also owns a storage facility on Highway 14, said Brian Schweigl, associate planner for the city of Janesville.

“It’s similar to what you’d see on Highway 14,” Schweigl said. “The buildings are different sizes and lengths. They have said some of the units will be larger for folks that want to store boats, campers, etc.”

The facility, 1107 W. Avalon Road, will offer nine separate units and a small office building.

The status: The project’s site plans were approved in February, Schweigl said. The property had been located in the town of Janesville and was annexed into the city in November, he said. It has industrial zoning to accommodate the proposed development.

Jeff Fox, owner of Fox Den Store-It, was unavailable for comment. However, according to the company’s website, Fox Den has storage units in Newville/Edgerton, Kentucky and South Dakota in addition to the two Janesville locations.

The company was founded in 2012 with its first location opening in Janesville.

The website says the new facility will have electronically controlled access and can store household items, office supplies, vehicles, motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats and RVs.

“They operate a storage facility in the Janesville area already,” Schweigl said. “They have knowledge gained from operating that facility and see there is need and there is demand for a facility on the south end of the city.”
